Institute for Creative Sustainability

A multidisciplinary, non-profit organization based in Berlin. A focus is on the theory and practice of creative sustainability, emphasizing self-organization and local urban initiatives. The Institute coordinates educational services, networking events and publications exploring CoHousing and related projects like CoWorking and community gardening in the context of a post-growth, democratic urban development. id22 has an international orientation and is happy to work with people with and without refugee experience!

I helped to found the Institute in 2003 with support from Berlin’s UfaFabrik, a model ecological and cultural urban village. Inspiration came from a large event which I also helped organize in 2000, called id22: The Festival for Culture, Ecology and Community. A bottom-up, multidisciplinary approach to sustainability has been the main approach from the very start. In 2008 the Institute moved to a new Building Community (Baugemeinschaft) in Prenzlauer Berg and then in 2012 began the move to the Spreefed CoHousing (Cooperative) project in Berlin-Mitte where it is now based, in the Project Space.
